What is Feliway for cats?
Feliway for cats is a group of products that can change unwanted behaviour with the help of feel-good scents. What effect does Feliway have on cats?
Cats communicate through messages also known as pheromones. A distinction can be made between territorial, relaxation and harmonious messages. Territorial messages are associated with the unwanted types of behaviour mentioned above. Feliway products are designed to counteract this with positive relaxation and harmonious messages. In general, the objective is to reduce the feeling of stress based on a territory perceived as unsafe.
When does Feliway start to work?
When using diffusers, the manufacturer assumes that changes in a cat's behaviour will occur after about seven days. If the mode of behaviour has become consolidated over an extended period of time, it can also take longer for a cat to react to the feel-good olfactory messages. The effect of the Classic spray is almost immediate and lasts for around four to five hours.
How long should you use Feliway?
You should use a diffuser for at least 30 days. The effect is achieved by spreading the smell throughout the room. If you choose a longer usage duration, you also have to change the bottle after 30 days for full efficacy. There are always a few drops left in the bottle that don't have sufficient contact with the wick to evaporate. Use the spray once a day on the areas marked by the cat, which could be scratch marks on the wall or furniture marked with urine.
What has to be considered when using Feliway?
If you use Feliway Classic spray, never spray it directly on your cat or the scratching tree. It's possible to use it inside a carry case, but not when the cat is actually inside it. Take the expiry date on the bottle into consideration too. Ensure free air circulation when using a diffuser and don't plug it into a socket underneath furniture. The refill bottles are only compatible with Feliway diffusers. Feliway is harmless for cats, dogs, humans and fish in aquariums. However, the products should never be used in a room where there is a cage with parrots or budgies.
