What types of dog leads are there?

Dog leads sometimes differ significantly in terms of workmanship, material and function. Here is a short summary of the most common types of leads:

- Slip leads: Non-extendable fixed length slip leads are recommended for dogs that quite literally need to be kept on a short leash. This is usually two to three metres. Short leads are often no longer than 100cm. Leads of this kind are suitable for young or frenetic dogs that still need plenty of leadership.

- Tape leads: If you wish to give your dog more freedom on walks but also be able to keep it close to you if necessary, a retractable tape lead is a good choice. If the situation permits, you can give your dog the opportunity to explore the surroundings.

- Tracking leads: Tracking leads offer plenty of exercise. They are used with working dogs, e.g. search dogs.

How do you recognise good dog leads?

A good dog lead adapts to your individual needs and those of your dog. Robust workmanship is definitely important to provide security on outings with your dog. High-quality dog leads may be made from leather, for instance – a durable but elegant material that makes the lead easy on the eye. Nylon leads are particularly tear-proof and weather-resistant. Besides, there are rope, polyester and artificial leather leads. Dog leads should withstand the wind and rain, fit well in the hand and be easy to clean. As well, leads that can be adjusted in length are very practical.

Which dog lead for puppies?

Here too, the right dog leads for puppies must meet your and your four-legged friends's requirements. With dog leads for puppies and small dogs, look for a light weight, pleasant feel and easy-care material. Adjustable dog leads are good for young and small dogs too. We list several leads for puppies and small dogs in our bitiba online shop – find out for yourself.

How long should dog leads be?

The length of dog leads depends greatly on how much guidance your dog needs and how much freedom you wish to grant it. Simple slip leads are usually around two to three metres long, which is more than sufficient for day-to-day walks. Short slip leads of just one metre in length are suitable for dogs that should walk to heel. Extendable tape leads offer more flexibility. If the situation permits, you can let your dog freely explore and sniff within a radius of several metres and, if necessary, simply retract the lead to bring your four-legged friend close to you again.

How should a dog lead be held?

Dog leads are available with and without a wrist strap or handle. Most regular slip leads are made with a loop for a secure hold. Leads without a loop are often used for dog sport, as dogs are sometimes allowed to run on the lead. A wrist strap could get caught in bushes or obstacles. Dog leads without a wrist can be rubberised, which ensures a good grip. Besides, there are dog leads that can be adjusted with D-rings and carabiner clips to be worn casually around the shoulders or hips. It's recommended to hold dog leads with both hands to have the best possible control over your dog. The lead should sag a little so that your dog can walk along easily. Your dog will learn how to walk on a lead during training – the most important requirement for relaxed walks.
